Zagori translates to behind the mountains, is the leading mountain destination in Greece, with a unique architecture, tradition and wildlife. There are 46 villages, with numerous stone bridges, more than 200km of hiking paths, the mythical dragon lakes and the deepest canyon on earth which is written in Guinness Book of records from 1997

ITINERARY FOR OUR VISITORS

DAY 1

Hiking tour at Stone bridges and traditional villages of Zagori

Zagori is one of the most beautiful mountainous regions in Greece and is famous for the traditional villages and the stone bridges of the area

The inaccessibility of the area combined with many rivers and streams, especially during the winter months, required in the past the construction of bridges. Today, about 60 bridges are preserved in very good condition, and there are testimonies about another hundred that have been destroyed.

Starting point is Kipoi village (translates to gardens) village built on a hill at an altitude of 750m. The main distinguishing characteristic of the village is its gardens, which are surrounded by a river embellished by stone bridges.

Bridge of Plakidas or Kalogeriko

The most popular three arched stone bridge of “Plakida or Kalogeriko” in Zagori area. It was built as a wooden bridge and later on (1814AD) it was reconstructed as a stone bridge by the Abbot Serafeim. The length is 54m, width is 3,15m and the highest point is 6,7m. This bridge connects villages Kipi, Dilofo and Koukouli

Bridge of Kapetan Arkouda

Easy hiking route towards Dilofo village leads us to the second single arched stone bridge of “Kapetan Arkoudas” (Captains’ Bear Bridge), built in 1806AD. First name was “Xeropotamos Bridge”. On August 6, 1906, the Ottoman army killed Captain-Bear, a Macedonian chieftain, and at that time, the bridge was named after him. This bridge connects villages Kipi, Dilofo and Vitsa

Bridge of Kokkoris or Noutsos

“Kokkoris or Noutsos” single arched stone bridge the most well known bridge in Zagori area. It was built in 1750AD, length is 35m, width is 2,5m and the highest point is 13m.

This bridge connects villages Kipi, Dilofo and Koukouli

At the side of the bridge there’s an amazing climbing field for advanced climbers

Bridge of Misios

We walk beside the river banks and we find the next double arched stone bridge is “Misios” built in 1748 and connects villages Koukouli, Kapesovo, Vitsa and Monodendri. The length is 37m, width is 3m and the highest point is 10m. It is located in the entrance of the main part of Vikos gorge. It follows the stone steps towards Vitsa and Koukouli villages

Koukouli village

We hike towards to traditional village of Koukouli through the stone steps of Koukouli and we explore the village which is dated from the 13th century. At the village there’re lots of traditional houses, the complex of the old school, arches, fountains and the church of Virgin Mary one of the best churches in Zagori area. We relax drinking refreshment or a coffee and we continue through the stone steps between Koukouli and Kipi villages

Bridge of Lazaridi

The last bridge of our hiking tour is the single arched stone bridge of Lazaridis which was built in 1753, beside another climbing field for advanced climbers. The name of Lazaridis comes from a local trader who owned a watermill beside the bridge. At that place the first part of Vikos gorge ends and we observe the cliffs beside the river. This stone bridge connects the villages, Kapesovo and Koukouli with Kipi

DAY 2

Crossing Vikos Gorge

Vikos is listed as the world's "deepest relative to its width" gorge by the Guinness Book of Records among others.

The gorge is particularly well-known to hiking enthusiasts, the trail is not considered technically difficult, it involves a long hike that is suitable for hikers.

The route starts at Monodendri and ends at the village of Vikos. The route has uphill, downhill and flat sections, with various landscape pattern changes, from the deep shade of dense vegetation to the dirt paths and from the old cobblestone paths to the bed of the Voidomatis River, with views of the Tymfi peaks.

In about 2 hours after our start, we reach the "Klima" spring. The tap from which we can get water is next to the path. Megas Lakkos opens in front of us, the largest of the ravines where the highest and narrowest point of the Gorge is. We fill up our water bottles with cool water and relax.

The continuation of the trail takes place in a forest of oak trees alternating with small openings with a view of the towering, vertical slopes of Astraka Mountain with the impressive large caves. On the plateaus of the route we meet, they bear witness to the intense human activity in the ravine, in the past.

Close to the end hikers have the chance to swim in Voidomatis cold blue waters and drink water from the springs and visit the Monastery of Vikos’ Saint Mary. Nowadays, only the sanctuary is preserved, which was built in 1738 AC.

The trail descends steeply to the riverbed and the route is in shaded areas. The trail passes through an area of huge plane trees, with the imposing peak of Gamila above. Over 186 species of birds and 1,800 species of plants are found in Vikos Gorge and you will have the opportunity to see some during your hike

DAY 3

Relaxing day at the coast and ancient city visit (Nikopolis)

Nikopolis (=the city of victory) was the capital city of the Roman province of Epirus.

The city was founded in 29 BC by Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian in commemoration of his victory in 31 BC against Marc Antony and Cleopatra at the naval Battle of Actium nearby. Quickly after that, was announced as the major city of the wider Epirus region.

Places of interest nearby: Roman nymphaeum, Octavian's campsite memorial at Actium, the Roman Odeum, the main gates, ancient mosaics of a roman villa, the Pre-Christian walls, and more.

Wrapping up this day with relaxation at one of the most impressive beaches of the Epirus region, but also the whole of Greece, Monolithi. The combination of greenery, golden sand, and turquoise water leaves the best impression and prepares the visitor for an unforgettable escape.

Hiking to the Dragon Lake of mountain Tymfi

Getting a taste of the mythical so-called "Dragon lake" while observing the “dragons” (Alpine Tritons) and the magnificent scenery of mountainous nature

This Dragon Lake is the most famous of all the alpine lakes that exist in the Greek mountains and the most popular destination in Zagori. It was formed by the activity of the last glaciers and its waters are fed by melting snow.day 4 hiking 001 A unique hiking, explore the beauty of nature, take memorable photos of cliffs and wild goats, and discover the small village of Papigko.

During the hike visitors may take a few breaks to drink water from the springs while observing flowers with vivid colors (mostly wild lily) growing at high altitudes. day 4 hiking 004

At the end of the route (and about 2,000 meters altitude) there is the lake where visitors may take a break to absorb the breathtaking views.

On the way back there is a planned visit to the Ovires of Rogovos (natural swimming pools) in Papigko village

DAY 5

Hiking day at Beloi viewpoint of Vikos Gorge

Welcome to the longest stone trail in Greece! It is one of the most famous and popular routes of Zagori and one of the most impressive structures in Greece.

The route offers breathtaking views. A point from where the view of Vikos gorge is truly impressive. Including the two stone bridges, it has been classified as a historical monument, since it is a typical example of local folk architecture.

Vradeto Steps

We start our hiking route from “Kapesovo” village which is located in central Zagori area at an altitude of 1.120m where there are traces of ancient walls. We ascending the famous stone steps of “Vradeto”, 1.500 stone steps (approximately), 39 turns and 2 single arched stone bridges. That trail was the only way of connecting the locals to the other villages of Zagori area up to 1973.

Close to the end of that trail and the entrance of Vradeto village, we approach Saint Athanasios church. Vradeto village is the highest village of Zagori at an altitude of 1.340, and tradition says that first inhabitants came at the beginning of 17th century. We stop for a coffee or refreshment in the center of the village

Then we continue (easy trekking route) towards the viewpoint of “Beloi” (altitude 1.400m) which translates to nice view or nice balcony, while watching the breathtaking view of Vikos gorge and huge cliffs. During the hike we observe amazing rocks formation and in spring or summer the rare species of wild lilies

This last brake is to observe the statue of Zagorian Women which honors them because they helped the armed forces during 2nd world war. It is 6m height and 2 tons weight
